Senate Republicans fire elections chief, setting the stage for a legal fight heading into the 2024 elections

Wisconsin Senate Republicans voted to fire the state’s top election official, Meagan Wolfe, triggering a legal battle over the oversight of voting in the state. The move came as a result of ongoing outrage within the GOP over the 2020 election. After the vote, Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul filed a lawsuit to block Republican leaders from appointing a new administrator and to declare Wolfe administrator. Republicans argued the move was necessary to address lack of confidence in the election process. Critics of Wolfe, who supported efforts to decertify the 2020 election, applauded the vote. Wolfe stated she would not leave her position until ordered by a court. Despite the vote, Wolfe plans to continue in her role as litigation ensues. The Wisconsin Elections Commission, responsible for hiring Wolfe, did not put forward a nomination for her removal, making the Senate’s vote questionable to some.
