"Response by Tax-Exempt Organization Scholars to Request for Information" #ELB

Top nonprofit tax law scholars responded to a Request for Information from the Ways and Means Committee, emphasizing the importance of tax-exempt organizations’ voice in society and democracy. They clarified that laws don’t forbid all political activity by these organizations. They suggested that 501(c)(3) organizations should lawfully engage in nonpartisan voter education and activities. They urged Congress to lift restrictions preventing the IRS from guiding 501(c)(4) organizations’ political activities and tighten disclosure about foreign donors. They also called for a new study on 501(c)(3) campaign activities and acknowledged that affiliations among tax-exempt organizations are standard for those engaging in political activities.
