Alabama Secretary of State unveils new voter roll management system after ERIC withdrawal

Alabama launches own voter database, Alabama Voter Integrity Database (AVID), after withdrawing from national Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) system. AVID, under Alabama’s control, aims to manage state’s registered voter rolls. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will identify registered voters who’ve moved and obtained licenses in other states, making them ineligible to vote in Alabama. AVID also uses National Change of Address File and Social Security Death Index for voter registry updates. Alabama also seeks memorandum of understanding with other states to access voter rolls, isolating dual-state registered voters. Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, and Tennessee already signed the memorandum. People found in Social Security Death Index will be removed from Alabama’s voter rolls, others designated inactive for four years. Updates needed before voting. ERIC system, established 2012, uses similar methods. AVID criticized as redundant and lacking uniqueness, with only five states onboard.
